Tokyo, Japan is a dynamic metropolis located on the eastern coast of Honshu, the largest island of Japan. It serves as the capital and most populous city of the country as well as the political, economic and cultural heart of the Japanese nation. With a population of over 14 million within the 23 special wards and more than 37 million in its metropolitan region, Tokyo stands as the most populous urban area in the world. The Greater Tokyo Area extends across multiple neighbouring prefectures—including Kanagawa, Saitama, and Chiba—forming a vast urban expanse recognized globally for its scale, innovation, and economic influence. Originally known as Edo, the city began as a small fishing village before rising to prominence in the early 17th century when it became the seat of the Tokugawa shogunate. Following the Meiji Restoration in 1868, the Emperor relocated the imperial capital from Kyoto to Edo, renaming it Tokyo, meaning “Eastern Capital.” Since then, the city has undergone remarkable transformation, especially after the devastation of the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake and the extensive destruction during World War II. In the postwar decades, Tokyo rebuilt rapidly emerging as a global hub of technology, finance and culture.
